LAKE WALES - A man was shot this morning after breaking into home whose occupants included a security guard.

The shooting at 1261 Grove Ave. happened between 10 and 10:30 a.m., according to the Lake Wales Police Department.

A sleeping man and two sleeping children were in the home at the time the break-in occurred, police reported. The burglar, identified by police as Tampa-area resident Michael Collins, 45, gained access by cutting a screen. The adult resident, who police said works as a security guard, woke up, retreived a gun and shot the burglar at least twice.

The burglar fled the home, jumped into van and sped off, later crashing the van in an orange grove, police said.

Police caught up with the suspect in the grove. They said the suspect told them he was shot and needed help.

The suspect was taken by medical helicopter for medical treatment at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was listed this afternoon in stable condition. To  read the full story please visit the following link;
